The Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra (PPO) enveloping itself in a new sparkling sound
18. March 2010 at the CCP, Metro Manila

Back in 1985 Aries Caces, who while studying at the Music College of UST in Manila, was invited by the then Ambassador of Austria Dr. Friedrich Posch to continue his studies in Graz and later at the Music College in Vienna. He graduated in piano with Prof. Paul Badura-Skoda, then with Prof. Roland Keller, then completing chamber music with Prof. Georg Ebert before finishing his third post graduate in Conducting under the tutelage of Prof. Uros Lajovic in 1999. Now, ten years later, Caces stands on the faculty of this very College himself. Last year he received an invitation to return to his home country as resident conductor of the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra (PPO).

Due to outside politics the PPO has had its ups and downs over the past 30 years, but as this concert has clearly shown, it has the ability to outperform itself, especially with somebody at the baton, who does not conduct for the media but for his musicians, and who has the fiery enthusiasm to give back to his country, what he had received at College in the 14 years as a student. It stands without doubt, this man's career has yet a long way to go.

a  What the Press has to say

Isis Concert Group is most pleased to introduce two new artists to our web site:

Madrid-born coloratura soprano Pilar JURADO

A much acclaimed and well travelled artist who can not only sing, but who has also made herself quite a name as a composer. The French daily Le Monde wrote " she stood out from the cast with the beauty of her voice, the precision of her coloratura, the quality of her vibrato and her presence on stage" and The Washington Post commented "she enchanted the audience with her earthy voice and emotional range .. no less than a star". In 2008, she was commissioned to write an opera for the Teatro Real de Madrid with the request, that she should interpret one of her own characters, thus becoming the first woman composer for this theatre, who will watch her opera premiere from the stage.

Zagreb-born cellist Jelena OČIĆ

Her play met standing ovations on three continents. Energetic, poetic, virtuoso, she unfolds a rich kaleidoscope of colours and emotions. Bernard Greenhouse, founding cellist of the Beaux Arts Trio, lauds her as "one of the most remarkable cello talents today". The late Siegfried Palm, a major figure in 20th century music, called her "one of the most promising interpreters of New Music". Jelena is sharing the class for violoncello with her husband Prof. Michael Flaksman who is Vice President at the Music College in Mannheim, Germany. She is under contract with the Challenge Classics Label.
